Let’s Prepare! The Tools You Will Need & Safety Tips

You’ll be happy to learn that Alpha One BMW speakers are super easy to install! To transform the sound of your car, all you have to do is take off a few interior trim panels. Enough talk – it’s time to get started.

Here are the tools you will need for the job:

The whole process may take up to around 180 minutes, but it’s not difficult with the right tools. Just to be safe, we also strongly recommend disconnecting the car battery before you work on any electrical components in your car. How to do that? Simply follow the instructions below:

  1. Lift up the floor panel in your trunk.
  2. Rotate the two locking tabs 90 degrees to access the battery compartment.
  3. With a 10 mm socket, remove the negative battery terminal and set it aside.

PRO TIP: Wrap a towel around the latch to prevent it from locking you out if it closes!

Step-by-Step BMW G30 Alpha One BMW Subwoofer and Speaker Upgrade Tutorial

A1 speakers setTo make things easy to follow, we’ve broken this guide into separate chapters for each area of the car. Please note that some of the cable connections shown in the video linked above might differ from what you’ll get in your BMW speaker kit, due to updated manufacturing processes. That being said, they will be functionally identical and the same installation instructions should apply.

Let’s dive in!

Chapter I – Alpha One Front Door Tweeters

We’ll begin up front with the tweeters, which are the quickest part of the job.

  1. Using your hands, pop the tweeter housing off and disconnect the cable by pulling it free.
  2. Remove the foam backing and unroute the cable.
  3. Using a pick tool or your finger, pull back the plastic tabs holding the tweeter in place while applying a constant, gentle pull on the two wires coming from the tweeter.
  4. Once free, remove the factory tweeter and replace it with the Alpha One BMW tweeter.
  5. Place the foam backing back in position and route the cable back through.

Front tweeters done! Now on to the front midrange BMW speakers.

Chapter II – Alpha One Front Door Midrange Speakers

With the tweeters replaced, we move on to the midrange BMW speakers in the front doors.

  1. Using a trim tool, gently pry up the trim piece at the top of the door panel. Once it breaks free, pull it off – it can be tight.
  2. Using a T20 bit, remove the two screws now exposed underneath.
  3. Using a trim tool, begin removing the door panel from the bottom. Once you pop a couple of tabs, you can switch to using your hands. Be mindful of the lock pin.
  4. Once free, remove the door latch cable, then remove the main connector by pulling it free and pop off the lower section of the harness. This will give you enough slack to rest the door panel on the ground without having to remove everything.
  5. Using a T20 bit, remove the three screws holding the midrange BMW speaker in place. Once free, disconnect and remove it.
  6. Plug in the Alpha One mid BMW speaker and secure it with the same screws. Note: if you’re installing our redesigned A40 or A45 bmw speakers, you’ll get a filter cable labelled with how to connect it. Plug mid-out into the BMW speaker. The tweeter (or the BMW harness going to the tweeter) plugs into the other side of the filter, and the lead from the BMW amp that went into the factory BMW subwoofer and speaker plugs into the remaining end of the filter.

PRO TIP: Before reinstalling the door panel, reset the locking pins. Squeeze the locking pins on the tip, and with a trim tool apply upward pressure near the bottom of each pin – it will pop back into place.

  7. Reattach the connector harness and latch cable, then begin reinstalling the door panel. Start from the top and work your way down, being careful to make sure the pins are aligned in their holes before pressing them home.
  8. Put the two T20 screws back in and pop the trim back on, bottom side first.
  9. Finally, plug the tweeter back in and snap the plastic housing back in place.

Okay, front door midrange speakers – also done! On to the rear.

Chapter III – Alpha One Rear Door Tweeters and Midrange Speakers

The rear door process follows the same steps as the front, so things should go even more smoothly at this point.

  1. Slide the window shades in, then with a trim tool and your hands remove the upper trim unit from the door.
  2. Remove the trim piece the same way as on the front door – trim tool and hands – then remove the two T20 screws when exposed.
  3. Like the front, use your trim tool and hands to remove the door panel from the bottom. Remove the latch cable and a few clips to relieve tension, which will allow you to rest the panel on the ground.
  4. Remove the three T20 screws holding the factory rear midrange BMW down, disconnect it, and remove it. Reverse the process to install the Alpha One BMW subwoofer and speaker.
  5. The tweeter in the rear door is located in the door panel itself, so it’s easiest to fully remove the panel and lay it on a flat work surface. Disconnect the tweeter and remove all connectors and clips. Note: use a screwdriver to remove any factory glue from around the tweeter housing before prying it out.
  6. Like you did up front, gently pry back the clips while pulling up on the cables to free the tweeter, then snap the Alpha One BMW tweeter in place. Route and tidy the cable.
  7. Reset the locking pins just as you did on the front door, then reconnect all connectors including the new tweeter.
  8. Once the latch cable is in, begin placing the door panel back on from the top. Replace the T20 screws, the trim, and the shade housing, and you’re done with the rear.

Chapter IV – Alpha One Center Channel BMW Speakers

The center channel BMW speaker replacement requires a bit more disassembly since you’ll need to remove the infotainment screen to access the center grille.

  1. Using a trim tool, remove the side access panel, being mindful of the weather stripping. Remove the single T20 screw underneath and start pulling off the surrounding trim. Remove the connectors and set the trim aside.
  2. Disconnect the two trim arm connectors (for one, rotate the arm then pinch and pull; for the other, simply pinch and pull).
  3. Remove the two T20 screws holding the screen in place, then wiggle the screen up and out. Disconnect the video cable – press in the tab and pull it free. A trim tool may help here.
  4. Use a trim tool to pry up the center grille.
  5. Using a T20 bit in a 90-degree tool or short ratchet, remove the four T20 screws holding the BMW midrange and tweeter speaker housing in place. Once free, lift the housing up and disconnect it.
  6. Remove the factory tweeter the same way as elsewhere: unroute the cable, pull up on the wires, and pull back on the tabs simultaneously.
  7. For the mid, remove the three T20 screws, pull it out, and put the Alpha One mid BMW speaker in its place.
  8. Snap the Alpha One tweeter in, route the cable, and plug the tweeter into the mid. To complete the install, plug the factory connector into the remaining port on the BMW speaker, or – if you’re using an older-generation BMW subwoofer and speaker – plug it into the crossover cable.
  9. Place the housing back in position and screw it back down, then snap the grille back in place.
  10. Reinstall the screen by plugging it back in and pushing it down, then replace the two T20 screws.
  11. Plug the connectors back into the center trim, snap the trim back in place, screw in the T20 screw, and replace the side access panel. You may need to pull the weather stripping back to get it to sit properly – sliding a trim tool through will help.

PRO TIP: Use the provided twist ties to tidy up any loose cabling behind the housing before screwing it back down.

Chapter V – Alpha One Rear Deck BMW Speakers

With the center channel done, the rear deck BMW speakers are a quick and straightforward step.

  1. Using a trim tool, pry up the rear deck grille.
  2. Using a T20 bit, remove the two screws holding the tweeter and, while you’re there, the three screws holding the mid.
  3. Disconnect the cables from the mid, then remove both the mid and tweeter.
  4. Feed in the cable from the Alpha One BMW tweeter and sit it in place.
  5. If your Alpha One A40 mid BMW replacement speaker has only one input, plug in the crossover harness, connect the tweeter to TW-out, and plug the factory connector into it.
  6. Sit the mid BMW speaker into place, then screw both the tweeter and mid down.
  7. Finish up by snapping the grille back into place.

Chapter VI – Alpha One Underseat BMW Woofer

Last but not least, it’s time to replace the underseat BMW subwoofer. Before you begin, reconnect the battery so you can reposition the seat electronically for easier access to the bolts. CAUTION! After you’re done adjusting the seat, make sure to also disconnect the battery again.

  1. Slide the seat all the way back, then articulate off the rail covers on the front of each seat rail to expose the T50 bolts.
  2. Using a T50 bit, remove the two T50 bolts at the front of the seat. Slide the seat all the way forward and remove the two T50 bolts at the back.
  3. Carefully tilt the seat back – you can use your foot for support if needed.
  4. Using a T20 bit, remove the four T20 screws holding the BMW subwoofer grille down and remove the grille.
  5. Pull back the carpet slightly to expose the four T20 screws holding the BMW subwoofer to the housing. Remove them.
  6. Disconnect the connector from the BMW subwoofer, then carefully pry the BMW subwoofer out using a trim tool or small screwdriver. Note: unlike some other BMWs, the G30 subwoofer is not glued in place, but it is still a snug fit – take your time.
  7. Place the Alpha One BMW subwoofer in, plug it in, and replace the four T20 screws.
  8. Screw the grille back in, lower the seat, bolt the seat back down, and reinstall the seat rail covers.

And that’s it – your BMW G30 Alpha One speaker upgrade is complete!
