BMW X4 (G02) Harman Kardon Upgrade – Alpha One Case Study

Most of our case studies start from the same place: a customer with a factory system that was never going to sound good, finally doing something about it. This one's different.

Steve's 2025 BMW X4 M40i came with Harman Kardon – the best audio option BMW offered for this car, and a system plenty of owners are perfectly happy with. So the question he was asking isn't "how do I fix this?" It's "is there actually more to get?" That's a harder question, and a more interesting one.

Where we started – Stock BMW G02 Harman Kardon system (S688A)

The Harman Kardon Surround Sound System (option code S688A) sits at the top of what BMW offered in the G02 X4. On paper, it's a genuinely serious setup.

Straight from the factory, it consists of:

• 7 tweeters
  
• 7 midrange speakers
  
• 2 underseat woofers (8 ohm)
  
• 10-channel amplifier

That's 16 speakers distributed around the cabin, driven by a dedicated amplifier rather than the head unit. Since Steve's car runs the MGU head unit, the amp sits in the trunk as a Receiver Audio Module, taking its signal from the head unit over a fiber optic connection rather than conventional wiring.

Compared to the HiFi system most North American BMWs get, this is a substantial step up – more speakers, better placement, and a proper multi-channel amp behind them. Nobody's describing it as bad.

So what's actually missing?

Factory BMW G02 Harman Kardon disadvantages

The honest answer is that Harman Kardon's weaknesses only show up once you start asking something of it.

The first is power. 

In BMWs running iDrive 7 and up, the S688A amplifier is rated at around 464W across all channels – a noticeable step down from the roughly 600W figure in earlier, pre-iDrive 7 cars with the same option code. Spread across 16 speakers, that's less headroom than the speaker count suggests, and it's the reason the system starts sounding strained rather than simply louder past a certain point on the volume bar.

The second is tuning. 

Harman Kardon in BMWs is voiced for a very wide audience, which is a reasonable commercial decision and a compromise all the same. The result is a system that can get harsh through the mids and highs at volume rather than more detailed, and a bass response that hits hard but runs out of low-end extension earlier than you'd want.

Why did the customer choose Alpha One?

How to install the BMW X4 (G02) sound upgrade?

Thanks to our custom mounting brackets and plug-and-play harnesses, nothing here requires cutting, splicing, or permanent modification. Everything reverses cleanly if you ever sell the car. Below is a brief overview of the process. 

CAUTION! This is for illustration only – a full, model-specific installation guide comes with every kit.

1. Front door speakers – remove the door trim, swap the midrange and tweeter, reinstall the trim.
2. Rear door speakers – same process at the rear, midrange only.
3. Dash and center speakers – pop off the grilles, unscrew the housings, replace the drivers, reassemble.
4. Rear side and pillar tweeters – remove the relevant trim panels to access the factory tweeter positions.
5. Underseat woofers – unbolt and tilt the seat, lift the carpet, unbolt the woofer housing, replace the driver, reassemble in reverse.
6. Amplifier – access the trunk side panel, disconnect the factory harness from the RAM, connect the Alpha One plug-and-play harness, mount the new amp on its bracket, reconnect, replace the panel.

Two things worth pulling out of that.

First, "more detail in highs, mids, and lows" is the specific improvement we'd expect here, and it's not the same as "louder." Steve already had 16 speakers. What he didn't have was the power to drive them cleanly or the tuning to get the most out of them.

Second, he'd never installed car audio in his life and still completed the job. That's not an accident – it's what plug-and-play is supposed to mean.

Steve went all in, but you don't have to.

If you've got Harman Kardon and a fixed budget, the amplifier is the smarter first move. The HK speakers aren't the weak link in that system – the 464 W of factory power is. Adding a proper amplifier gives your existing speakers considerably more clean power to work with, along with a DSP tune built around your preferences rather than the factory's compromise.

You'll still hit the limits of the stock drivers eventually. But you'll have the power reserve already in place, ready for a speaker swap whenever you decide to make one, and you'll be enjoying better sound in the meantime.

Is the BMW G02 Harman Kardon (S688A) upgrade by Alpha One worth it?

If you're starting from HiFi or Base audio, the case for upgrading is obvious. Starting from Harman Kardon, it's a fair question – and Steve's answer was about as unambiguous as they come.

What you're getting isn't just better hardware. It's a system tuned to your listening preferences instead of to a market average, with enough clean power behind it that volume translates into detail rather than distortion. Harman Kardon is a good system. It's just not the ceiling of what’s possible with the factory mounting locations.
