You're configuring a new BMW X3, ticking boxes, and there it is: the Harman Kardon surround sound system, bundled in a package with a few other goodies. A famous audio brand, a bunch of extra speakers, more power. Sounds like a no-brainer for the extra musical driving pleasure.
But is it? Or is it just a pricey sticker on the speaker grilles?
The honest answer: it depends on what you expect from it. Today, we'll take a closer look at what's actually inside the BMW G45 Harman Kardon audio system, how it compares with the base audio, what it does well, where it falls short, and how to get the most out of it. If you're looking for some buyer advice before placing your BMW X3 order or wondering about what’s at the musical heart of your ride, this article is for you.

Let's dive in!
The fourth-generation BMW X3 arrived in late 2024 (as the 2025 model year), and when it comes to sound, the choice is fairly simple. For this X3 generation, there are three audio systems on offer: Base, HiFi (S676A) setup, and the optional Harman Kardon Surround System (S688A).
This is the default sound system available in every BMW X3 (G45). According to the official BMW Group press releases, it comes with only 6 speakers and a 100 W amplifier. It isn’t stated whether the figure relates to RMS or peak power, but knowing Bavarians it probably is the max output of the amp.
A slight upgrade over Base, the HiFi setup adds one center channel speaker (for a total of 7 speakers) and bumps up the amplifier power output from 100 W to 205 W. So not much of an improvement overall.
The top available uprated factory audio for this generation, traditionally labeled as Harman Kardon, which has partnered with BMW since the 1990s. It comes with 14 speakers and a subwoofer (more on the speaker layout later) for a total of 15 speaker units, but there is some confusion regarding the amount of speakers online, with some reviewers claiming it to be 16. This is probably due to BMW not communicating their audio specs consistently. Additionally, the G45’s HK is much more powerful – compared to the HiFi system, the amplification in it is handled by a RAM and booster amp combo.
How powerful exactly?
Well, it’s not that easy to say, again – BMW Group’s press release and European configurator claim 765 W (probably peak), while the US website states 750 W. Let’s give BMW the benefit of the doubt, since in the past their US marketing claims (in the case of G01, for example) were off and assume the press release is correct.
Check out the table below to see how they compare directly.
| Parameter | Base | HiFi (S676A) | Harman Kardon (S688A) |
| Speakers | 6 | 7 | 15 |
| Amplifier peak power rating | 100 W | 205 W | 765 W |
| Availability & price | Standard (no cost) | N/D, standard on some trims | Optional – $900 extra (as of October 2026) |
In a direct comparison, the difference between Harman Kardon and HiFi or Base is massive. More than twice as many speakers, several times the power, and a dedicated subwoofer. Whether you'll actually hear all of it is a different story – but we'll get to that.
As mentioned above, the BMW G45 Harman Kardon sound system consists of 15 speakers (including a subwoofer), powered by 2 amps with a combined output of 765 W. In terms of how they are laid out, it’s pretty similar to what we’ve come to expect from BMW:
The setup responsible for amplification consists of a RAM and booster amp, with DSP processing taking care of the signal. Interestingly, in the G45 BMW moved to a new audio architecture – the Harman Kardon found in this vehicle is the first fully active system. This means that each speaker is powered by its own amplifier channel with its own DSP processing. The G45 is also the first BMW X3 generation to utilize the Active Noise Cancellation technology in its cabin.
Users and reviewers online are pretty consistent in what they say about this setup.
On first impression, the Harman Kardon is a clear upgrade over the Base or HiFi audio. The soundstage is a bit wider, and the whole setup feels more capable at higher volume. In short, it's a balanced sound for everyday driving, but not one an audiophile would call neutral or detailed.
However, when compared to the X3’s previous generation (G01), this sound system supposedly lags behind, even though it has almost twice the amplifier output (464 W vs. 765 W). According to some of the reviews online, the BMW G45 Harman Kardon suffers from:
All in all, it seems that more amplifier power and the move to the active architecture did not result in as much of an upgrade as the X3 owners had hoped for.
Considering all the things we mentioned earlier, that’s a pretty tough question, but here’s our take that might help you with your decision. If you are not the kind of person that would ever consider upgrading an audio system with an aftermarket one, but at the same time are not willing to listen to completely underwhelming sound and listen to the music often, definitely get the HK package. It’s a more powerful sound experience than the Base or HiFi and not that expensive at $900 (as of October 2026).
On the other hand, if you don’t mind upgrading your audio system, our professional opinion is that you would be better off with either of the two other systems, the Base or HiFi and an Alpha One Amplifier and Speaker Upgrade package. Upgrading the G45’s Harman Kardon system poses to be much more difficult and expensive, mainly due to its fully active architecture.
Don't worry though – we are still developing an amplifier upgrade for you HK owners, so stay tuned!
Since there's no stock option above HK in the BMW G45 X3, upgrading the existing system with an aftermarket solution is the only way to go further. For the Base and HiFi (S676A) audio, our recommendation is to upgrade both the amp and speakers at the same time. This is contrary to our usual recommendation for people on a tight budget, where we tend to suggest getting a better amplifier first. That being said, the lack of tweeters in those two systems is simply egregious, especially when you compare the G45’s HiFi with the analogous setup found in its predecessor, the G01, which had 5 tweeters.
In the case of the G45 Harman Kardon system, currently we can only suggest upgrading the factory speakers with a set of Alpha Ones, as we’re still working on an amp kit for this platform. But the speakers are where the HK system loses the most anyway, so you’re getting rid of the weak point right away.
Our Alpha One speakers are designed as plug-and-play upgrades built for BMW's factory locations, including the under-seat woofers. One G45 owner who has already upgraded reported more bass from the front seats, better separation in the higher frequencies and less distortion at high volume.
The BMW X3 (G45) Harman Kardon sound system is a clear step up from the lower-end factory options like Base or HiFi – more speakers, dedicated subwoofer, 765 W of power, and adjustable surround processing.
However, compared to the BMW G01, it’s unfortunately a step down. Out of the box, it sounds underwhelming compared to one's expectations knowing the system is fully active, has a dedicated subwoofer, and is much more powerful than its predecessor.. But while it won't satisfy a demanding audiophile, for most drivers who don’t plan on ever installing an aftermarket upgrade it's well worth ticking the box.
With that being said, if you know that you’ll want more in the future, but already have the Harman Kardon option installed, keep your eyes peeled for when we launch a G45 amp kit.
The BMW G45 Harman Kardon sound system comes with 15 speakers – 5 tweeters, 5 midranges, 2 under-seat woofers, a rear subwoofer, and 2 rear D-pillar surround speakers. The default Base system has just 6 speakers, and the Hi-Fi option comes with 7 speakers.
It's quoted at 765 W peak power, compared with 100 W in the Base or 205 W in HiFi.
No. The Harman Kardon Surround Sound System is the top factory option in the G45 X3. The Bowers & Wilkins Diamond system is reserved for larger models, like the XM, X5 or 7 Series.
